RECOMMENDATIONS
The five day women’s conference held a number of joint sessions and met in groups. There were also papers read out by subject experts from Sudan and from other countries. The conference passed a resolution on the last day after taking into consideration all the recommendations and exchange of views. But it would be important to note some of the salient features of the recommendations arrived at conference.
- Political parties should organize meetings and seminars to disseminate more information about the provisions in the CPA and the Interim constitution of southern Sudan regarding the status of women.
- All parties should unite on matters of national importance.
- Women in political parties should unite and form a group to protect and propagated about their rights.
- Parties need to be supported financially to set up offices and hold conferences if they are to play a key role in democracy of constructive participation and criticism.
- Parties should be trained and equipped to play the role of alternative body and provide the checks and balances that are germane to multi party democracy.
- More information needs to given to the people on democratic institutions, forms of governance, elections and referendum, rights and duties provided in the CPA, and the Interim constitution.
- Social and cultural behavioral pattern of the people encumber the normal process and democratic rights of women. In order to encourage women’s participation, dynamic efforts are needed to be put in place to sensitize people in general and political parties in particular on gender issues. There is an urgent need to create a level playing field for all political parties and all inclusive.
- Women will have to be encouraged to form democratic platforms to act as bridge builders to highlight and also advocate for their rights.
- The women parliamentarians and legislators in states must form a women’s forum to focus attention on these issues and secure their rights.
- Cutting across political, religious and regional differences, the women of improve upon the functioning of the implementing agencies, especially with regard to education, health and economic advancement and independence.
- Strengthen healthy interaction with the media and project women issues.
- A group effort should be made to form a smaller representative coordination group of women from among the participants of this conference to go into the details of the outcome of this conference. Such a group will meet more often and initiated necessary actions to formalize the group to act in the best interest of the welfare of the women of Sudan.
- More worship should be held to encourage and build the capacity of women leadership.
- Steps should be taken to create awareness about women’s right to have equal opportunities and access to leadership and decision making positions at all levels of government, political parties, and civic organizations.
- Considering the current education gap, the women of Sudan face considerable hurdles in achieving this goal. Therefore, encourage the women to address this issue in all ways and allow their perception to prevail.
- To sensitize and promote the capacity of civil society organizations to conduct outreach campaigns targeted at increasing political involvement among women.
- To sensitize and promote the participation of women in community leadership positions in Sudan and in rural areas in particular
- To help women develop the leadership and technical skills they need to be effective community leaders.
- To strengthen indigenous training institutions and networks and promote more such institutions.
- Identifying prospective women with leadership qualities at the grassroots level and develop a training model for them to build their capacities.
- Developing training curriculum, training materials and provide scholarships to women to further their education.
- Increased and more frequent interactions with international organizations like the UNDP to facilitate and accelerate the capacity building process of women.
- Provision of education at grass root level and encourage women, especially the girl child to get educated.
- Construction of more number of “girl-friendly” schools in all states in as many places as possible.
- The system of boarding schools for girls should be encouraged and the private sector and NGOs should be encouraged to assist the government in such ventures.
- There must healthy interaction with the media. The media should be sensitized to focus more on the problems concerning women, education and women’s empowerment. The media should also provide a platform for women to highlight the problems of war widows the education of girl child, the status of destitute women, orphaned children and such other social problems.
- The government should encourage the NGOs and international agencies like the UNDP to conduct income generating education and training like tailoring, handcrafts etc for women.
