Kiir Reconstructed the new National Assembly PDF Print E-mail

Monday 01 August, 2011 (JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has issued a number of presidential decrees transforming the sub-national Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) into the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) and reconstituting its membership. The president’s decree issued on Monday merged the membership of the previous parliament in Juba with the addition pf South Sudanese members coming from the National Assembly in Khartoum.

The Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly had 170 elected members while those who were elected to the Khartoum’s National Assembly were 96 in number. The President has also appointed 66 more members to the National Legislative Assembly, making the total membership 332.

Establishment and Appointment of Representatives of the Council of States

In another presidential degree no. 11/2011 for "Establishment and Appointment of the Representatives of the Council of State of the Republic of South Sudan.

There were 20 South Sudanese members of the Council of States from Khartoum and 30 more appointed members, making the total 50. The two houses have the total membership of 382.

South Sudan has a total of  23 political parties, but only six parties have had their members appointed to the new bicame thrall national parliament.

The new bicameral parliament is expected to have its first sitting on Wednesday, 3 August.

Kiir is also expected to name members of his new cabinet in the next few days.
